Staff reported a series of operational and safety fixes at the convention center and the affiliated museum during the board meeting, including a bollard installed to protect a narrow kitchen corridor, temperature sensors in the freezer, a multi-day elevator outage during extreme cold and additional sprinkler heads required by a code change.
An operations presenter said staff installed a bollard by the hotel-connector kitchen doors where hot meal boxes sometimes block the corridor, and they relocated a fire extinguisher to reduce the risk of accidental impact. Sycamore Engineering ran data lines to a walk-in freezer and installed temperature sensors to provide remote alerts if temperatures rise; staff noted the freezer should be at 0 degrees.
The facility experienced an elevator outage in one garage elevator for about three days during a recent extreme-cold period. KONE technicians determined a heater had tripped and restored service once temperatures allowed safe operation. Routine safety checks included extinguisher, elevator and AED inspections and annual fire-alarm testing; an exterior strobe that failed during testing had its batteries replaced by Corson. A parking-garage heat sensor that had shorted was repaired, and backflow inspections passed.
Staff said they were informed during an inspection that new code requirements for skylights required additional sprinkler heads. The inspector, reported as from Corson, told staff the change applied going forward and that many buildings with skylights would need the same modification; staff asked for the specific code citation for follow-up with the city fire inspector.
