The Canal Winchester Landmarks Commission voted March 24 to allow the full enclosure of the southern overhang at 10 West Oak Street, a component of the Elevate 1828 project’s adaptation of a historic elevator building.
The applicant asked to square off the open-ended canopy and install a bronze anodized storefront on the east end and a full-size glass overhead (garage-style) door on the west end. The interior proposal includes a small bar or “boot” area that will connect to the building’s vestibule and adjacent campus spaces. Staff presented drawings showing a 15-light grid storefront that will match the vestibule treatment previously approved for the project.
Commissioners discussed preserving views into the historic chutes that lead to the elevator’s basement, incorporation of a glass walking surface over those features, and the utility of an overhead door to allow indoor-outdoor interaction for events. Commissioners asked staff and the applicant to verify clearance for the overhead door; the applicant said they may need to modify the header or lower the ceiling when redoing siding. The applicant also said floor and patio mockups and a head-house window detail will be provided at a future meeting.
A roll call vote recorded the approval; all voting commissioners present voted yes.
Staff noted this is one phase of a multi‑meeting review for the larger Elevate 1828 project and said a mockup and material samples would be scheduled for the commission to inspect prior to later approvals.
