Downtown pizza shop asks council to designate 15-minute pick-up parking; matter referred to streets committee

Anthony Neal II, who identified himself as representing a family-owned downtown pizza shop at 43 West Street, asked the council to consider restricting three parking spaces in front of his business to 15-minute parking from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Neal said many pickup customers were deterred because near-term spaces are occupied and that the change would help his family’s business.
Council members and staff discussed enforcement limits and observed that short-term signage is often followed by the public but can be hard to strictly enforce without police time or tire marking. Several council members suggested signage and coordination with downtown businesses and the Geneva Business Association to encourage employee parking off-street so public spaces remain for customers.
Council members agreed to refer the request to the streets committee for a future meeting and invited Neal and the Geneva Business Association representative to attend. The manager and staff also suggested placing signage directing customers to additional parking (Depot Street) and exploring voluntary commitments from downtown businesses to reduce employee curb parking during peak hours.
