The Lubbock City Council unanimously approved a rezoning request March 25 to change a parcel on West Fiftieth Street from Neighborhood Commercial (NC) to Auto‑Urban Commercial (AC).
Kristen Sager, director of planning, summarized Zone Case 1121112‑GS (District 2), filed by Presto Hill Lifters on behalf of applicant Lon Miller. Staff notified 46 property owners and received no written responses, Sager said; the Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval by a unanimous vote. Sager said the property sits along a principal arterial (Fiftieth Street) in an area of mixed commercial and residential uses, that the city's future land use plan designates the site for commercial uses, and that staff found the request to be compatible and not to change the character of existing development.
Two members of the public spoke in favor during the public comment period before the hearing. Kathy Cantu said the property owner sought a zoning change for properties at 2106, 2110 and 2112 Fiftieth Street to allow expansion of a business and to permit a west‑facing garage door; Michael Maldonado said the change would not alter the building’s front elevation other than a new sign and would allow expansion of business services.
Councilwoman Wilson moved approval and Councilman Rose seconded. The motion carried on a unanimous vote.
The ordinance will take effect according to the city's normal ordinance timing and any conditions listed in the adopted ordinance; the planning director said staff made the ordinance effective upon acceptance of relocated sewer infrastructure tied to a related student housing project in the area.
