Commission approves liquor licenses, an executive-session settlement and property abandonments in consent votes

The Augusta City Commission approved a series of routine license applications and other consent items on March 25, including multiple alcohol licenses, a workers' compensation settlement and street abandonment tied to a public housing demolition project.

Most license matters were handled by the public services committee and passed unanimously, including retail package and on-premise beer-and-wine permits for addresses on Olive Road, Broad Street and Walton Way, and approvals for hotel and restaurant venues. Planning & Development and the Sheriff's Office recommended approval of the applications listed on the meeting agenda.

In executive-session follow-up, the commission authorized settlement of a workers' compensation claim by Essene Kipp for $20,000 (claim number 2024-018910). The settlement motion was moved and seconded in open session after the closed meeting and the commission recorded a unanimous vote.

During engineering and other committee action, commissioners also approved abandonment of portions of roadways within the Dogwood Terrace site to support demolition and redevelopment plans. Commissioners discussed timing and confirmed that deeds and final conveyances would not be executed until tenants had been relocated and demolition steps could proceed without cutting off resident access.

The Dogwood Terrace abandonment drew more discussion about tenant relocation timelines and site security: housing authority staff said relocation had reduced occupancy from about 270 units to 27 and that the authority expected to finish relocations within a few weeks.
