Davis County School District official urges students, staff to use '1,421 hours' before last bell to focus on belonging and learning

Assistant Superintendent Logan Toon of the Davis County School District urged students and staff in a short video message to use the 1,421 hours remaining before the school year ends to study, perform and support one another.

“To what are you going to do with those 1,421 hours?” Toon asked, adding that students will spend much of that time “in choir performances and theater productions and sporting events,” but also taking tests and doing classwork. He encouraged students to “do your best. Study for those tests. Try hard. Put your best effort forward.”

Toon directed the message to teachers and support staff as well, saying their work will be “packed full of hard work” and involve “help working with students to help them create their learning plans.” He framed the district’s current priorities as belonging and inclusion and “developing structures and systems around high reliability schools,” saying the district has seen progress but still has “a lot of work to do.”

“We believe at the core of what we do is caring. Caring creates a sense of belonging, belonging creates a sense of inclusion, and students who feel, like they belong and that they're included are ready to learn when they come,” Toon said. He urged staff to “find a student and make a difference for that student, one student at a time.”

The video closed with Toon asking students and staff to work hard as the school year approaches its end: “So work hard, study hard, make a difference, and go do the work that we're known for here in Davis County School District. Have a great spring.”
