Texas House adopts series of ceremonial resolutions recognizing Space Day, community groups and commemorative observances

AUSTIN — The Texas House of Representatives on March 25, 2025, suspended its rules repeatedly to take up and adopt a series of ceremonial resolutions recognizing Space Day, local counties and organizations, and observances including Kidney Month and a Desi Day of Action.
The House adopted House Resolution 508, introduced by Representative Paul, recognizing March 25, 2025, as Space Day at the State Capitol. Rep. Paul described Texas' role in the space industry and said, “Texas has honed over 2,000 aerospace, aviation, and defense businesses with commercial space ports in Houston, The First, Midland, McGregor, Van Horn, and Boca Chica, making it a hub for space innovation. The space industry contributes $11,000,000,000 to the Texas economy annually and sports a 45,000 jobs across the state.” The resolution was adopted after the chair asked, “Is there any objection?” and recorded that “the chair hears none.”
The chamber likewise adopted resolutions honoring local entities and observances: HR 601 congratulating Plano East High School on its 2024 UIL 6A boys basketball championship; HR 551 recognizing Johnson County Day at the capitol; HR 521 recognizing the Sheriff’s Association of Texas Day; HR 565 commemorating the opening of the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington; HR 58 recognizing March 2025 as Kidney Month; and HR 602 recognizing March 25, 2025, as a Desi Day of Action at the State Capitol. Each resolution was brought up by a member who moved to suspend the rules so the House could consider the item immediately; in each instance the chair asked for objection and recorded none.
Members used brief explanatory remarks when taking up many of the resolutions. For example, Rep. Kerwin introduced HR 551 and provided context on Johnson County’s history and attractions; Rep. Oliverson introduced HR 58 and noted that patient advocates from the American Kidney Fund were present in the gallery; Rep. Lalani (Leilani) and other members recognized groups from the South Asian/Desi community during adoption of HR 602. Several members asked visiting groups in the gallery to stand for recognition, and House members repeatedly moved to “add all names” to the adopted resolutions; the chair recorded no objections to those motions.
These measures were procedural and commemorative; none created policy or set new legal obligations. The House also adopted a motion earlier in the day granting permission for committees and subcommittees to meet while the House was in session, a procedural authorization moved by Representative Patterson and adopted with no objection.
Less formal recognitions also occurred: tributes to deceased Capitol staff, birthday wishes for Representative Gene Wu, and welcomes for visiting school and civic groups including TCU Student Government Association, Weatherford ISD and Waco ISD delegations, and the Texas LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce.
Ending: The House concluded the floor session after adopting the ceremonial calendar and moved to adjourn pending the reading and referral of bills until 10 a.m. Wednesday; the chair recorded no objection.
