Mr. Cunningham described a recent DDOT ride-along that distributed bus tickets and low-income housing lists at transit centers and urged more work to improve the Detroit Department of Transportation. Caller who identified themself as Betty A. Varner, representing the Soda Elsewhere Black Association, said thefts of fence material at a local park have led her group to pursue landscaping boulders instead of replacement fencing and asked Council Member Durhall's office for assistance ahead of a June event.
An online caller emphasized that the committee has responsibility for transit improvements, saying seniors and children are affected when buses run late and that money spent elsewhere could be redirected to improve service. Several other callers urged expansion of health department services and suggested the city transition some land bank activities back to city departments to support economic opportunity.
Another caller, Santiago Romero, criticized the chair for statements he said were inaccurate about a public report and alleged the chair "lied on public record" related to distribution of a report. Mr. Foster called for cultural change in city leadership and greater transparency about civil rights settlements; William M. Davis urged expansion of health department services and a reduced role for the land bank. Marguerite Maddox raised concerns about public health and safety and referenced a statutory citation (recorded as "section 54 1 31").
Council staff responded to several callers: Member Waters said staff would follow up with callers on health department items and invited callers to contact the council office for further conversation. Committee practice limited public comments to one minute per speaker for this meeting due to the budget schedule.
