City begins Front Street corridor safety study after cluster of crashes; consultant kickoff planned

Brian, a staff member, told the committee that a safety study covering the entire Front Street corridor (from the bridge east of the corporate line) is underway after several crashes at Front Street and East Boundary over a two-week period. The study is part of a regional safety effort involving Lucas, Wood, Ottawa and Sandusky counties and will support future federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (Safe Streets for All) applications, Brian said.
He said Front Street is a high-crash corridor outside the state routes and the city engaged an engineering firm whose proposal was below the threshold for a formal bid. Staff issued a purchase order and plan to schedule a kickoff meeting so the consultant can collect traffic counts and begin analysis.
The study will review crash history, pedestrian crossings, signal warrants and potential treatments such as hybrid beacons at park crossings. Brian said the work will also review corridor speed between West Boundary and the bridge and evaluate existing signals to confirm they meet warrants.
Committee members noted local interest in pedestrian improvements and asked that staff keep residents informed as the study proceeds. Brian said the study will provide a programming document to help prioritize future corridor improvements.
