Perrysburg wastewater plant reports decreased overflows after Grassy Creek work; plant treated 1.857 billion gallons in year

Department of Public Utilities staff told the Public Utilities committee on Jan. 17 that the wastewater plant treated 1,857,000,000 gallons of wastewater in the year and that maintenance work and projects are reducing sanitary sewer overflows.
Key metrics presented by staff included: the plant treated 1,857,000,000 gallons of wastewater over the year, an average daily flow of about 5,000,000 gallons, a single-day high of 21,790,000 gallons (during a rain event), and effluent totals returned to the Maumee River totaling roughly 1,800,000,000 gallons. Staff reported 48 sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) resulting in approximately 14,288,000 gallons discharged to the Maumee River; staff said the Grassy Creek interceptor lining project had a measurable impact in reducing SSOs.
Operations and maintenance accomplishments cited by staff included: cleaning over 41,000 feet of sanitary sewer, CCTV camera inspection of over 73,000 feet of sanitary sewer, setting 163 meters, and GPS locating a little more than 1,900 fire hydrants for the geographic information system. The department also said it purchased a dump truck to haul sludge beginning in 2025 to reduce plant odors and will undertake projects including new digester lids and design of new primary treatment tanks.
Staff also announced a personnel milestone: Matt Hess, assistant plant manager, obtained his Class 4 license, which staff said improves succession planning and operational capacity at the plant.
Why it matters: the metrics inform the city's compliance and capital priorities; staff said the stormwater utility implementation and ongoing capital projects will support reductions in inflow and infiltration and further decrease SSOs over time.
Ending: staff offered to distribute detailed metrics and maintenance lists by email to committee members and said larger plant projects and reporting will continue to return to committee and council for authorization as needed.
