Transportation staff reported the district's driver complement is authorized at 56 positions, with 50 employees currently on board and three operators in the hiring pool. The presenter said 46 drivers is the approximate practical minimum to reliably complete home-to-school runs; management staff continue to drive when necessary to fill gaps.
Staff said the board's recent approval of an ATU agreement (approved by the full board earlier in the week) will allow the district to begin bringing non-CDL drivers on board and expand specialized-transit operations. Committee members asked whether coaches can drive 14-passenger vans for school trips; transportation staff and board members discussed licensing rules and union-contract constraints, and staff said they would seek clarification from state regulators and report back.
The auction of surplus buses and the staffing update were approved; staff will return with additional hiring and licensing clarifications.
