Parks and recreation: track resurfacing, accessibility ramp and playground repairs scheduled

Mark Gomez, Chief of Parks and Recreation (Cemeteries), updated the committee on parks-related work connected to school facilities.
"The track is ready to go for spring track season," Gomez said, and the district plans to apply a binder layer at the end of track season in June to extend the surface life and cushioning. He said a concrete ramp will be installed between the track apron and a storage building to improve rolling access and to help a coach who uses a wheelchair.
Gomez said the ramp area is currently compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act but that the ramp would improve day-to-day accessibility; he said work is weather-dependent and could be completed before the track season ends or, at latest, by next year.
He reported the West High School tennis-court step repair will go out to bid later this year and that the district will solicit bids this spring to resolve long-standing drainage issues at West's track; a bid package will be necessary to establish likely costs. For playgrounds, Bakersville's poured-in-place rubberized surface has localized issues; the contractor will return in summer to repair two spinner areas. Gosselaar's playground conversion to a rubberized surface (part CIP, part district funds) should be completed in June, and McDonough's 2'5 year-old playground replacement is planned later in the calendar year.
Board members asked that Parks and Recreation be included in site-planning conversations for phase-one construction projects and stressed the need to ensure fifth graders (now located in middle schools) still have accessible outdoor play or green space. Gomez said his staff will participate when parkland or play areas are part of school projects.
The parks update was presented as information; board members requested continued collaboration between Parks and Recreation and district facilities as phase-one school construction and site planning proceed.
