Salem School Board recognizes winter sports athletes, highlights state champions

The Salem School Board used the opening portion of its March 20 meeting to recognize student-athletes and coaches for the winter season.
Senior Wyatt Rice broke three long-standing Salem High School swimming records, including the 50-yard freestyle and backstroke; coaches are listed as Shell Scott and Anne Reynolds. In boys’ basketball, senior Brock James scored a school single-game record—51 points—against Timberlane High School on Feb. 25 in a 90–59 win, surpassing a 1985 record. In track, senior Lenny Ortiz Blanco won the state championship in the 55-meter dash and set a school record; senior Nick Daigle set a school record in the 55-meter hurdles. Both qualified for national competition.
Wrestling received extensive recognition. Senior Evan Lynch was a three-time state champion in the 120-pound class and set single-season (59) and career (192) win records; other individual state champions included Spencer Buscemi (126), Talon Walton (192), freshman Kaylee Chandler (100 pounds), sophomore Ella Paris (107) and freshman Kira Lynch (132). The girls’ wrestling team won the state championship—the first in Salem High School history. Coaches and staff named in remarks included Nick Eddy, Joey Buscher, Trevor Dearden, Keith Dearden, Avery Santiago and Ariel Hernandez; athletic director Scott Insigna and coach Nick Eddie also addressed the board.
Athletes came forward for photo recognition; the board and the superintendent thanked coaches, families and program supporters. The board’s recognition was presented as part of its regular student- and staff-recognition agenda; no formal board action was required.
