Board reviews CSIP updates: curriculum alignment, benchmarks and behavior reporting

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education received a multi-part update March 24 on the district’s Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP), covering curriculum alignment, benchmark testing, professional development and behavior-data reporting.
Why it matters: CSIP is the district’s central framework for aligning instruction, assessments and building operations. Board members heard where the district has completed work and where staff still expects more progress, including a literacy plan that depends on state guidance.
Jamie Russell briefed the board on CSIP action steps, saying district teams have completed alignment for three of four core subjects and will begin science next school year. “We have gone through 3 out of the 4 core subjects,” Russell said; he assigned a 75% completion score to that action step. Russell also described work to link state and local assessment data to identify low-performing areas and to create professional-development processes that use data to guide training.
Dr. Beck summarized CSIP Lead 3, which focuses on aligning building operations across K–12. He said the district is standardizing behavior intervention strategies, curriculum-adoption procedures and the Galileo benchmark process. Beck said the board packet includes building-level counts and percentages for discipline referrals districtwide, but it does not include types of incidents or resolutions to protect student privacy.
On literacy, staff said they are continuing district planning but are awaiting a state-level literacy plan; the superintendent noted the district has waited three years for state guidance and is moving forward with its own materials and intervention pieces in the meantime.
A board member asked whether the discipline breakdowns include demographic disaggregation. Administrators replied the report shows discipline by building only; demographic breakdowns are available to the board and in state DESE reports but would require removal of identifying student data to publish publicly.
Next steps: Staff will continue curriculum work, expand classroom walkthrough instruments, and refine district reporting through Infinite Campus. The academic services plan and CSIP artifacts are linked in the board packet for review.
