CNS Science Olympiad team qualifies for state meet; 31 of 38 competitors earned medals at regional competition

John Rice, Director of Science, and coaches Marty Miner and Matt Glaub recognized Science Olympiad students and advisors for their performance at the Mid‑State B regional competition.
Rice told the board the district hosted the regional competition and that the district placed fourth, earning a spot at the New York State Science Olympiad in East Syracuse in April. He said 31 of the 38 students who competed across three teams earned at least one medal.
Coach Marty Miner told the board he has coached Science Olympiad for three decades and praised the students’ preparation. Students who spoke described specific events and placements: Zachary Hoffman placed third in chemistry lab; Jacob Strait placed second in optics; other student speakers reported placements across events such as tower design, materials science, bungee drop and forensics. A student explained optics included a written test and a construction portion requiring mirrors to redirect a laser to a target.
Board members thanked the coaches and students for their achievements and noted the longevity of the program in the district.
