CARPINTERIA, Calif. — The Carpinteria City Council on March 24 selected Ted Rhodes as the city’s nominee for the Carpinteria Community Association Volunteer of the Year, and publicly recognized several other nominees for their service.
Staff presented a slate of nominees who provided volunteer services to city programs in 2024, including: Ted Rhodes (open space preservation and trail advocacy), Gabby Edwards (Friends of the Carpinteria Library — fundraising and Measure X advocacy), Jenny McCurry (adult literacy tutor), Roz (Rosalyn Cahoot) (AgeWell senior programming), and Alex Peralta (various volunteer initiatives). Council members praised all nominees and requested staff ensure each is acknowledged on the city website and at community events. The council voted to forward the city’s selected nominee to the Carpinteria Community Association for the awards banquet on April 26.
Public comment in support of Ted Rhodes came from a longtime resident who described Rhodes’s multi‑decade advocacy on open space preservation and the bluffs. Council members cited Rhodes’s leading role over decades as a reason to select him this year, while also emphasizing the difficulty of choosing a single recipient from a strong list of volunteers.
Why it matters: Volunteer programs contribute to library fundraising, senior services expansion, conservation and trail preservation; council action will provide formal acknowledgment and community visibility for nominees.
