Commission awaits conservator site visit for Spring Haven pagoda

The Monona Historic Preservation Commission received an update March 18 on the Spring Haven Pagoda restoration project and agreed to await a conservation specialist’s site visit before committing to a course of action.
Commission staff reported that Legacy Architecture contacted the Conservation of Sculpture and Objects Studio (CSOS) and relayed that CSOS’s preliminary view favors preserving the pagoda in its current condition rather than full restoration. CSOS staff are currently working on the Alamo in San Antonio but will schedule a Monona site visit in April, staff said.
Commissioners raised safety and erosion concerns, noting roof deterioration, falling pieces and compromised columns. Members said a preservation‑as‑is approach might still include measures to stabilize and prevent further decay; commission members asked to have one or two commissioners present for the conservator’s site visit.
No formal decision was made at the meeting. The commission agreed to defer action until CSOS has inspected the structure and provided recommendations on feasibility and safety measures.
