Tree advisory board thanks council as city signs letter of intent for NYS DEC core grant

Mary Venaus, chair of the City of Oswego Tree Advisory Board, thanked the council for moving forward with a resolution authorizing the mayor to sign a letter of intent to participate in a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation core grant for reforestation.
"I just wanted to thank the council for putting forward this resolution, to authorize the mayor to execute a letter of intent to participate in the New York State DEC core grant, for some reforestation sites in the city," Venaus said during the public-comment portion of the meeting. She said the board expects to reforest roughly 25 to 30 acres within the city and that the college partner will contribute more than 300 acres on campus for reforestation.
Later in the agenda the council unanimously passed Resolution 63 to authorize the mayor to execute the letter of intent for participation in the DEC core grant. The roll call recorded six votes in favor with one member excused.
The council did not provide funding details or a final planting plan at the meeting. Venaus thanked Commissioner Rebbior for assistance identifying planting sites; the council's passage of Resolution 63 indicates municipal participation but does not by itself commit matching funds or a final project scope.
