Council accepts $2.25 million in state housing awards for homeowner rehab and lead line replacement

The Amsterdam Common Council on Feb. 12 authorized two agreements with the New York State Office of Community Renewal tied to housing and lead service-line work.
The city will receive $750,000 through a HOME-funded owner-occupied rehabilitation program intended to assist low- to moderate-income households with home repairs. Council members said staff would provide program income limits and eligibility details to councilors after the meeting.
The council also authorized acceptance of a $1,500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) award for a lead service lateral replacement program. Staff said the program will target low- to moderate-income households with lead lines and that previous project experience and EPA confirmation put a typical full-service lateral replacement cost at about $10,000 per service. Staff said the award represents roughly three times the volume of work the city completed two years prior under a similar program.
Both grant agreements were authorized by roll call; staff will follow state and federal compliance requirements for implementation and reporting, and will provide program detail to councilors and the public.
