Amsterdam sets CreekFest for Aug. 6; planners debate parking, bridge weight limits and traffic routing

City staff and local business representatives discussed plans for CreekFest, scheduled for Aug. 6 to replace Riverfest, and debated how to manage traffic, parking and a nearby bridge with a weight limit.

Organizers said they plan to concentrate the event along Lyon Street between Findlay and Forest (and in the parking lots adjacent to Dan''s and Chad''s properties) to keep the festival footprint compact but visible. Because of a bridge weight limit on one egress route, staff recommended closing a portion of Lyon Street in front of the Rockton House and routing north-south traffic onto streets that do not cross the restricted bridge.

Speakers raised liability and emergency-access concerns if oversized vehicles attempted to reach the festival area despite posted restrictions. Options discussed to reduce truck traffic included using posted no-trucking zones, deploying officers at uphill approach points to stop trucks before they reach the bridge, and using an APD-manned barricade at Forest Avenue to funnel pedestrians to the festival area.

Parking was a focal point. Organizers said Chad had agreed to let the city use his lot but that Sticker Mule (a private lot owner referenced) had not yet confirmed participation. Ideas to reduce on-site parking included a shuttle from Shuttleworth Park or use of other municipal lots and encouraging walking from nearby parking. Staff also proposed staging a site visit to evaluate layout and barriers.

Organizers emphasized that first-year logistics may require rapid adaptation and that event staffing (APD and possibly fire department involvement) would be coordinated with the mayor''s office and the departments.

Ending: Staff said they will continue outreach to property owners for parking access, finalize permit paperwork and coordinate with APD and AFD on barricades and traffic control ahead of the Aug. 6 date.
