Board approves accessible playground for Fawn Creek Park with $200,000 CIP funding

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors authorized the county administrator to execute a contract with Max Playfit to design and install an accessible playground and rubberized surfacing at Fawn Creek Park, using $200,000 allocated in the county's FY25 capital-improvement program.
The board heard a staff presentation describing the site selection and design priorities. Stuart Sandes, a county staff member presenting the item, said the location was chosen for its central county location and proximity to existing accessible parking and restrooms. Staff received design-build proposals from six vendors and recommended Max Playfit as the highest-scoring bidder whose price fit the county's budget.
Project details provided at the meeting state the county required a pour-in-place rubber surface that ties to the existing paved trail for continuous wheelchair access, multiple ramps and transfer stations, and inclusive play features. Sandes said equipment lead times are about 10 to 12 weeks after order, with roughly two weeks for equipment installation and one week for surfacing, with a projected completion by mid-to-late summer.
The board voted to approve the resolution authorizing the contract. Supervisors recorded unanimous support during the roll-call vote.
The contract award advances construction-phase work; Parks and Recreation staff are charged with executing the contract, monitoring installation and reporting progress to the board.
