Council schedules two community-development grant requests as consent items: Lions Club and Thomas A. Dorsey festival

City staff reviewed two community-development grant applications and recommended both for council consideration. The Villa Rica Lions Club requested $8,500 to help fund a Beach Boys tribute-band fundraiser at the Mill Amphitheater on Oct. 4, 2025; staff said the Lions Club has run similar fundraisers and requested $500 more than the prior year’s $8,000 award. The Lions’ program raises money for local charitable activities.
The Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace and Gospel Heritage Festival requested $10,000 for the festival scheduled June 27–29, 2025 at the Mill Amphitheater. Staff noted the organization was established to recognize Dorsey’s birthplace in Villa Rica and that this is the festival’s 31st year. Staff said the community-development grant program has $20,000 available in the 2025 appropriation and recommended approving both applications.
Council members disclosed memberships in local Lions clubs but said this was consistent with past practice; one council member said she supported placing the grants on the consent agenda. With no objection from other members, the items were placed on the consent agenda as consent items 6 and 7 for the next regular meeting.
