Villa Rica staff place Keep Carroll Beautiful electronics-recycling sponsorship on consent agenda

Keep Carroll Beautiful asked the Villa Rica City Council during a work session to sponsor and allow use of the city’s Villa Rica collection site (VPLEX) for its spring electronics-recycling event. Martie Griffin, executive director of Keep Carroll Beautiful, told council members the group holds two countywide electronics-collection events each year — a larger spring event and a smaller fall event — and asked the city to sponsor the spring site so residents would not have to travel to Carrollton to drop off items.

Griffin said the program collected nearly 50,000 pounds of electronics across the county last year, and that roughly 5,300 pounds were collected at the Villa Rica site. She said 73 vehicles visited the Villa Rica location and volunteers accepted older cathode-ray-tube (CRT) televisions and flat-screen televisions; Griffin noted CRTs incur a disposal fee (about $20 per CRT) and flat screens about $15 each and asked that any city sponsorship be used to cover those recycling costs.

The council asked procedural questions about resident privacy and data on devices. Griffin said the group works with Atlanta Recycling Solutions — a long-term vendor she described as R2-certified — and that devices are tracked and stored at a secured facility before processing; she added residents may remove or destroy drives themselves if they prefer.

Staff recommended placing the sponsorship request on the consent agenda. Council members raised no objection and the item was scheduled as consent item number 1 for the upcoming regular meeting.

Keep Carroll Beautiful organizes countywide electronics-collection events twice yearly. The spring event typically attracts more drop-offs, city staff said; the organization provided annual-report materials and a sponsorship request to the city for review.
