Representative Doug Pickett introduced a request statute (RS 30 2500 & 60 2) to the House Health and Welfare Committee to require that members appointed to public health district boards be elected officials or other elected county-level officials accountable to voters.
The measure would not change the appointing authority — county commissioners would still make appointments — but would require that appointees be elected officials rather than employees or appointed non-elected staff. Pickett said the language allows counties flexibility to appoint an elected official who is not themselves a county commissioner.
Pickett said the RS has been circulated in a second version and that counties support it; he said a public hearing would be scheduled soon. Representative Haley moved to introduce the RS, the committee voted by voice, and the motion passed.
The committee chair noted the RS will probably receive a public hearing in the coming days as members work to move House bills out of committee.
