Bowling Green City School District on March 25 told the board that planning for the new high school is moving from design development to construction and that an official groundbreaking is scheduled for May 1 at 4 p.m.
Superintendent Ted Hazelman said the district has begun work on a geothermal well field for the new building: “There will be 140 vertical wells drilled to heat and cool the new high school,” Hazelman said, adding that the system should reduce energy consumption and operating costs.
Hazelman also said the district expects to benefit from federal incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act. “The district anticipates receiving up to a 40% tax credit for the entire HVAC system of the new building,” he said, characterizing that credit as helping make the sustainable technology cost‑neutral.
District leaders told the board the project is completing the design‑development phase (DD), which refines materials, finishes and engineering systems. A board member who spoke earlier praised the district’s new “quality profile,” a communications document the district rolled out to highlight academics, arts, student leadership and fiscal stewardship; the profile will be available on the district website and via QR codes.
The board was given an overview of next steps: finish DD, coordinate engineering and architectural details, and hold the May 1 groundbreaking on the site where the new building will be constructed. The superintendent said more details will be provided as the district finalizes schedules and logistics.
The meeting did not include a formal vote on construction financing; the board was updated on project progress and communications materials.
