HPC withdraws consent form for 625 Haskins after family cites safety and cost concerns

The Bowling Green Historic Preservation Commission voted March 20 to withdraw the previously submitted consent form for 625 Haskins Road after family members raised concerns about restrictions and safety for the property’s elderly occupant.

Will Rodebush reported that he had spoken with the property owner’s son and daughter and that the family is "concerned about the house being designated saying the restrictions if they're to do anything usually it may cost more." He said the mother still lives in the home and family members worried a historic marker or designation could attract visitors and create safety issues. Rodebush recommended withdrawing or holding the consent form; the commission moved to withdraw the consent form for the site.

Commission discussion included acknowledgment that the Haskins site has historic significance — Rodebush described the parcel as the location of the Martindale first cabin in Bowling Green — but commissioners accepted the family's request to pause designation and signage so long as the owner remains concerned about safety and potential costs.

Rodebush made the motion to withdraw the consent form for 625 Haskins Road; it was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners noted the family might pursue designation or a marker at a future date when circumstances change.

The commission did not adopt any alternative action at the meeting and left the matter withdrawn from the current nomination roster.
