Johnston County officials dedicated the bridge on US 70 Business East at the Peaton Street Extension over US 70 East as the Commissioner Tony Braswell Bridge at a ceremony.
“Today, we dedicate the bridge on US 70 Business East at Peaton Street Extension over US 70 East as the Commissioner Tony Braswell Bridge,” said Presenter (not specified).
County leaders and family members said the naming recognizes Braswell’s role in connecting people and the community. “We honor Tony by dedicating and naming a bridge for Commissioner Tony Braswell. When I think of a bridge, I think about the connections, and I thought what Tony meant to connecting people together,” said the chairman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners, who said he spoke at the ceremony representing the board.
A family member of Commissioner Braswell described the personal significance. “I would probably need to live multiple lives at this point to have the impact that my dad had. I can definitively say I will not receive the honor of having a bridge named for me. But his most important and accomplished title was his label as dad. It’s one I now have as well,” said Family member (not specified). The family member said children commonly refer to the span as the “Papa Bridge,” and that driving over it had been a highlight of visiting Pine Level.
The event concluded with the presenter thanking attendees and calling Braswell “well deserving” of the honor.
