Shelby County superintendent highlights student events and new school safety system before spring break

The superintendent of Shelby County on Monday summarized recent student activities and district safety steps, saying the district will install an audio enhancement safety system in all schools and noting upcoming spring break.

The superintendent said last week featured several student events, including an elementary honors choir performance and a track and field competition that included athletes from Collins and Shelby County High School. He also mentioned a Collins baseball tournament that served as a fundraiser for the Blake Palmer Memorial.

The update included a recap of the superintendent’s trip to the AASA National Safety Summit in Lexington, Kentucky. He said district staff toured facilities in Jefferson County, heard presentations from Jefferson and Fayette counties about school safety, and reviewed national vendors’ equipment, including systems that center on AI weapons detection. "One of the things that we're implementing here in our, county, the audio enhancement safety system that will be going into all of our schools was featured as one of the best systems in the nation," the superintendent said.

The superintendent urged continued focus for the final four school days before spring break, saying staff should concentrate on academic growth and that the district looks forward to the break afterward. "We have 4 days this week that we need to stay focused with a lot of energy," he said.

The remarks were delivered as part of the district’s superintendent wrap-up and did not include any formal motions or votes.
