Fairhope leaders, residents push back after state pauses library funding over book placement

The pause came after a public commenter in Montgomery raised objections about how some books were categorized in the Fairhope collection, and APLS voted to pause funding pending an investigation, Sullivan said. "Part of that motion was also to immediately reinstate those funds if everything were to check out," she said.
Why it matters: Fairhope Public Library provides youth services and programming used by families and schools in the city. City officials and library supporters said a temporary pause of state funding could have been resolved quickly if APLS had first visited the library or clarified definitions such as the age threshold for "minor." The matter has drawn an unusually large turnout at the council meeting and widespread public comment.
Council response: Council members repeatedly said they do not intend to defund the library. Councilman Michael Martin said, "I have no regard to defund our library," and added the city will comply with state law if any changes are required.
