Council reshuffles arts line item: LA Arts to $15,000, Androscoggin Historical Society $10,000; smaller allocations discussed for other nonprofits
Summary
Councilors agreed to honor an existing $25,000 arts-and-culture line but split it into $15,000 for LA Arts and $10,000 for the Androscoggin Historical Society; they also discussed smaller awards for the Boys & Girls Club and a placeholder for Twin Cities Swim Team.

At the March 24 workshop the council resolved an administrative funding discrepancy for community arts and culture grants and discussed other small nonprofit requests.
Staff explained one line in the FY26 packet labeled LA Arts had, through prior budget actions and adjustments, effectively carried $25,000 that various organizations had expected to share. Councilors agreed to honor the original intent by splitting the existing $25,000 line into $15,000 for LA Arts and $10,000 for the Androscoggin Historical Society; that allocation preserves the current-dollar total without increasing the packet total.
Councilors also reviewed a $20,000 request from the Boys & Girls Club (which previously received ARPA capital support). Several councilors said $20,000 was excessive in the current fiscal climate and proposed a $10,000 allocation instead; discussion indicated willingness to support a smaller operating grant while encouraging the Club’s fundraising. The Twin Cities Swim Team, which requested $20,000 to cover pool rental and program needs, prompted a call for more information on the portion of swimmers from Auburn and whether other municipalities would contribute; a $5,000 placeholder was suggested for further discussion.
Councilors said they would prioritize clarity and fairness in distributing limited municipal arts and culture funding this year and asked staff to return with program-specific details for the swim team and Boys & Girls Club before final allocations are approved.
