Walker County Commissioners Court met March 20 and approved several personnel, technology and procurement items, while also receiving a financial audit presentation and discussing stormwater fees proposed by the City of Huntsville.
The court voted to reclassify a sheriff’s office IT position to an IT systems administrator with a higher salary point; to prepay 12 months of cellular “air card” service for body cameras tied to a grant; to upgrade the county’s disaster/Orion system with modules for case management and search-and-rescue; to authorize outfitting of an EMS Tahoe for $14,174.38 from the fiscal 2025 budget; and to approve a temporary part‑time office administrator for Road & Bridge. The court also authorized an early upgrade and subscription renewal for its Sage HRMS payroll system and accepted the county’s audited Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2024.
Many of the items passed by voice vote with the clerk announcing “motion carries.” No roll-call tallies were recorded in the public minutes for those votes.

What the court did not finalize at this meeting
The court discussed a proposed stormwater utility fee the City of Huntsville adopted; county leaders said they had not been given a clear estimate of how much the city’s change will cost county property owners, schools or churches and asked staff to re-open talks with the city manager. The court also discussed a proposed fee approach for a large solar project; staff will return with detailed fee calculations before the court acts.
Why it matters
The actions move forward several county operations: staffing for sheriff’s systems, continued rollout of SB22 body cams (cellular service prepaid to match grant reporting requirements), improved disaster response tools, equipment for EMS, temporary administrative support for Road & Bridge and a planned upgrade to county payroll systems. Accepting the auditor’s report preserves the county’s clean audit status and documents fund balances and budget performance for FY2024.
What’s next
Staff said most approved items are covered in the current fiscal 2025 budget or will be included in next year’s budget planning. County staff will return with fee recommendations for the proposed solar project and follow up with Huntsville on the stormwater utility implementation and cost details.
