The Seal Beach City Council formally proclaimed March 22–30, 2025 as National Tsunami Preparedness Week during its March 24 meeting and the city’s emergency services coordinator urged residents to prepare emergency “go” kits and subscribe to local alert systems.
Sergeant Brian Gray accepted the proclamation on behalf of the city and recommended residents prepare a kit containing food, water and supplies to sustain households for at least 72 hours. He also urged residents to sign up for the city’s alert systems (Nixle and AlertOC) via the police department website to receive timely emergency notifications.
Gray said the proclamation is part of the city’s cooperation with the California Office of Emergency Services and noted that California’s coastline has experienced tsunamis historically; the proclamation was intended to promote public education and awareness about tsunami preparedness in Seal Beach.
The council adjourned the meeting in memory of William Luna, an assistant engineer in Public Works, and the mayor said memorial details and a GoFundMe page established by the family will be shared when available.
