The Newport City Council approved the transfer of Hotel Viking’s liquor licenses and granted a related entertainment permit for the property at 1 Bellevue Avenue.
Patrick Coyne, attorney for the applicant, and Derek Shelley, Hotel Viking general manager, represented the owner during the hearing. Coyne explained the transfer is to HTLVI Newport TRS LLC and related entities; Shelley said the new ownership is a national investment group and that the hotel will operate under the same license privileges it previously held.
The council held a public hearing before taking action. Neighbors asked about amplified music and hours on the rooftop. Shelley told the council and neighbors that amplified music on the rooftop is limited, described as acoustic-style amplification and that the hotel’s rooftop venue closes at 10 p.m.; he said amplified music “does not go beyond 8 PM.” The applicant said bands have been limited in size (no large percussion) and that loud amplified events are not planned.
Councillor Carlin closed the public hearing and the council voted to approve the transfers of the Hotel Viking’s Class BT (hotel-wide service) and Class BH (mini-bar/rooms) alcoholic beverage licenses to the new entity. The council also approved a new entertainment license for specified outdoor hours subject to the conditions discussed at the hearing.
Councilors asked staff to ensure the approved license conditions and the applicant’s representations about music hours are reflected in any license documents.
