OGALLALA — Representatives of the sheriff’s office updated the Keith County Board of Commissioners on jail population, recent incidents and upcoming training. The office reported that the jail currently houses 10 inmates (5 locally) with one detainee temporarily in Lincoln due to behavioral and safety issues. Staff said an order for competency evaluation is in place for one individual; if the person is deemed competent for civil commitment or is committed to a regional treatment center the county will transport and hold the person until placement is arranged.
Sheriff’s staff reported recent repair and upgrade work in the courthouse courtroom audio system and said courtroom audio contractors were on site to complete work. The jail supervisor (identified as Travis in the meeting) said they had contingency plans for housing individuals who require psychiatric placement until transfer to Lincoln Regional Center or other receiving facilities.
The sheriff’s office also described mandatory training the office expects supervisors and key personnel to take through Region 2. The training includes sessions for dispatch, EMS and sheriff’s deputies; sheriff’s staff recommended making the training mandatory for supervisors and encouraged scheduling or recording sessions to accommodate shift workers. Commissioners asked that training be recorded or an alternate evening session be offered for night shift staff; staff agreed to work with Region 2 and to notify commissioners when the schedule is finalized.
