The Economic Development Committee on March 4 endorsed city-sponsored events and outreach for Fair Housing Month in April, including a student poster contest and partnerships with local community organizations.
Tammy Struts, city staff member, told the committee the city receives federal funds that encourage fair-housing promotion and that the Affordable Housing Task Force had recommended a series of outreach activities. “April is Fair Housing Month, with the federal funds that we have. Federal government does ask that we do promote fair housing,” Struts said.
Staff said dates and locations were not finalized but promotion will include the city website and social media; organizers planned meetings with the Hmong American Center and OLA to broaden language access and outreach. Shannon, an Affordable Housing Task Force member assisting with logistics, outlined a poster contest for schoolchildren under the title “Won’t You Be My Neighbor? — Access Opening Doors for All,” with prizes and online submission details posted on the city site.
Alder Henke moved endorsement of the events; Alder Killian seconded. The committee recorded a voice vote in favor with no opposition, and the motion passed.
Staff said they will share finalized dates and locations on the city website once set.
