Council declares April Fair Housing Month, endorses local events and education

The Wausau Common Council unanimously approved a resolution endorsing Fair Housing Month activities in April and asked city departments and the Affordable Housing Task Force to organize educational and community events.
Alder Lukens sponsored the resolution and Alder Watson seconded. The resolution asks the Affordable Housing Task Force and the Community Development Department to coordinate a slate of events including a documentary and panel on housing discrimination, workshops from the Fair Housing Council of Wisconsin and Judicare partners, and a poster contest for K‑12 students with an awards ceremony.
Council members encouraged residents, businesses and local organizations to participate. The council emphasized the events are intended to raise awareness about tenants’ and homeowners’ rights, provide legal resources and engage youth in fair‑housing topics.
Event organizers said the panel will include city staff and subject‑matter experts; the poster contest will include judges and awards. Contact details and a submission page were announced on the city website.
The adopted resolution is non‑binding and educational. City staff will publish event dates and registration information and report back to the council on outreach.
