Plan commission backs landmark designation for Saint John's Episcopal Church on McClellan Street

The City of Wausau Plan Commission voted March 18 to forward a recommendation to designate Saint John's Episcopal Church at 330 McClellan Street as a local landmark.
The nomination was reviewed by the Historic Preservation Commission, which voted 8–0 to recommend designation. Father Sam Cripps, rector of Saint John's, addressed the commission and provided historical context about the congregation and the building’s age and continuity of use.
Father Cripps described the parish’s long history in the community and the church’s stained-glass windows that commemorate local figures. "We understand that we have a responsibility to maintain for future generations and for our community the oldest church building in continual use in the city of Wausau," he said.
Commission members voted in favor; the motion was seconded and passed on a verbal vote. The recommendation now moves to city council for final action.
