The City of Wausau Plan Commission on March 18 voted to advance a recommendation to designate the Little Red Schoolhouse in Marathon Park as a local landmark.
The recommendation came to the commission from the Historic Preservation Commission, which held a public hearing and voted 8–0 in favor. Staff noted the Park and Recreation Committee also recommended designation and that the structure met the criteria listed in the staff report.
Brad (city planning staff) explained the Historic Preservation Commission’s role and reported its unanimous recommendation. "They held a public hearing last month and they weighed in on the historic value of the building," Brad said. The Park and Rec committee took up the nomination and recommended designation as well.
Commission member Balkan moved to designate the Little Red Schoolhouse; Borneman seconded. Members voted verbally in favor and the motion passed.
The commission’s action forwards the Historic Preservation Commission’s recommendation to the city council, which holds final authority to designate local landmarks under city procedures.
