DPW reports sanitary sewer overflow in Eliza Goodell area; staff pumped basements and notified DNR

The Department of Public Works reported a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) during a recent period of heavy rain that caused basement backups in the Eliza Goodell area, the committee heard March 12.
Public Works staff said crews responded, pumped out several basements and observed surface discharge. An investigation found excessive root intrusion in the affected sanitary main; that line had been scheduled for root treatment in 2025, and staff said the backup occurred about three months before the planned maintenance. Staff reported they notified the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and that the levels fell after maintenance work began.
"It turns out that the line that was impacted was impacted by excessive roots," a Public Works staff member said on the record. Staff characterized the response as appropriate and said no further immediate action was required beyond the planned root-treatment work.
The committee received the report and placed the director's report on file.
