Staff continues site search for fleet maintenance facility; Cherry Street parcel under due diligence

City staff updated the Infrastructure and Facilities Committee on March 13 about an ongoing search for a site for a proposed fleet maintenance facility, saying multiple properties remain under review and the MBX parcel on Cherry Street is undergoing due diligence.
City staff said the Cherry Street (MBX) property is being evaluated and that parking on the site and other constraints will require further conversations with the owner if the site remains viable. Staff also noted earlier outreach to the Menards Plaza property and a broader search that identified roughly 18 candidate parcels in prior work with a consultant (Barrientos).
Alder Daniel raised concerns about placing a fleet facility on Cherry Street because the downtown riverfront may have higher-value redevelopment potential. “I’m a little concerned about, the Cherry Street location as, you know, potentially, you know, prime riverfront, you know, development property,” he said, urging coordination with economic development staff. Staff said the matter will continue to be investigated and that, if feasible, the site will be brought forward for further committee and finance review.
No committee action or vote was taken on the fleet facility at this meeting; staff said the update will continue to be provided monthly until a preferred option is identified.
