The Madison Common Council on March 11 introduced an updated Code of Ethical Conduct for elected and appointed officials and referred the draft to a set of boards, commissions and committees for review. The introduction was for referral only; adoption will return to council after stakeholder feedback.
Alder Duncan explained she added referrals to a subset of boards to collect input from the bodies that will be affected by the code. The list included veteran and advisory bodies and the item’s public record shows additional referrals will be considered so all affected boards will have an opportunity to comment.
Two alderpersons recorded a no vote on the introduction (recorded in the minutes). Councilmembers said the referrals are intended to secure feedback from appointed boards before any final adoption, and staff will coordinate with the clerk and the mayor’s office to circulate the draft and collect responses from the referred bodies.
Next steps: staff will forward the draft to the referenced boards and committees, collect comments, and return a final draft to council for consideration.
