Caller urges lighting at Valero near Northwestern High, presses council on drug dealing and enforcement

A caller who identified herself as Shay used the morning public-comment period to press the council for action on a long-running neighborhood safety concern: she said lights at a Valero gas station that shine onto a nearby bus stop have not been repaired despite two years of requests and that the lack of lighting endangers students.

Shay also complained of persistent drug dealing and uneven enforcement, saying vehicle license-plate enforcement and visible policing appear to vary by race. “Every time I show you pictures and videos, nothing is done,” she said, and added that she will continue raising the issue until she sees results.

Council staff and members responded that constituent emails and evidence are routinely forwarded to the appropriate departments. The clerk and council members invited Shay to follow up with staff and said they have forwarded prior messages to departments for investigation; the transcript records offers to pass the caller’s materials to department staff for response but no immediate operational action was recorded on the floor.

The concern touches a school-area crossing and student safety: Shay specifically referenced children walking from Northwestern High School during evening hours and a bus stop she said is in poor lighting.
