Council approves $5.1M capital and $1.2M one‑time support for Charles H. Wright Museum

The Detroit City Council approved two one‑time allocations for the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History during a council budget hearing: $5.1 million for a mechanical‑systems replacement project and $1.2 million in operational support, council members and museum leaders said.

Museum leaders told the council the funding is intended to continue a multi‑phase mechanical upgrade that museum staff and engineers say is critical to preserving the collection, and to close a $1.2 million gap created after expected state transitional funds were removed from the announced budget.

Neil Barclay, president and chief executive officer of the Charles H. Wright Museum, told the council the museum has faced delays in an enabling millage process at the state level and a sudden loss of transitional funding. Barclay said the budget change “created about a $1,200,000 shortfall in the budget right at the top of our fiscal year.” He asked the council for help with both the capital and operating gaps.

Jeffrey Anderson, executive vice president of the museum, described the capital request as the next phase of a larger program of deferred maintenance the museum had previously assessed at roughly $25 million.
