The Aransas County Commissioners Court authorized staff to solicit proposals for medical, dental and vision insurance for county employees to evaluate options and plan designs.
Staff said several brokers had approached the county and that the county’s loss ratio with the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) had increased to about 10% and may rise further as additional claims are posted. Commissioners said they value TAC’s services but agreed to compare options including potential high‑ and low‑deductible plans and to consider dual plan offerings for employees. The court discussed past practice, retiree coverage (nine retirees remain on the county plan) and the budgetary impact of retiree coverage; one commissioner said the county’s retiree coverage costs are significant and may merit further discussion.
The motion to solicit proposals passed unanimously. Staff said TAC and other brokers will be asked to provide menu pricing, and the HR office will evaluate wellness initiatives to control long‑term costs.
