Seth Cover, an Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 52796, presented a proposal on Jan. 30 to install a set of steps at Ridge Run between the soccer field and the main parking lot to address a muddy, sloping path.
Cover described the planned work as approximately nine 5-by-5-by-8 wood box steps filled with pea gravel to cover a roughly 4-foot height difference. He said the estimated total project cost is about $900, with roughly $540 identified as the materials portion in his presentation. Cover said he plans to build the steps in spring (targeting May) once the ground has thawed and that he will limit the number of volunteers working with power tools at any one time and require safety gear.
Staff and commissioners advised Cover to contact the Diggers Hotline (utility-locating service) before beginning excavation; staff confirmed that the contractor or project executors must call the hotline themselves. Commissioners and staff said the city and community partner organizations typically do not self-fund Eagle Scout projects but offered to connect him with Friends of Parks for potential fundraising support. Chair Mike Starlet asked for a formal motion; a motion to approve the Eagle project was made and seconded and the commission voted in favor.
Staff said they would share contact and fundraising resources with Cover and coordinate the required permits and utility checks before construction.
The commission recorded the approval by voice vote with "aye" and "motion carried" on the meeting record.
