Hoops Pond restoration to begin in early February; pond to be drained for sediment removal and partial wall repair

City staff told the Auburn City Council on Jan. 16 that work on the Hoops Pond Restoration Project is projected to begin around Feb. 3, 2025, and will require the pond to be drained to allow for sediment removal and partial repair of a pond wall.
The city manager said the project will take approximately three to four weeks. Mike Talbot, the city’s superintendent of public works, drafted an informational letter that will go to adjacent property owners and public updates will be posted on the city web page under project updates and RFPs, staff said. The dewatering process will start in advance of the main work and could be noticeable to neighbors.
The city is partnering with the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District to perform the work. Funding for the project was provided through a grant awarded to New York State capital projects and is administered via the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), according to the city manager’s report.
Officials warned of minor disruptions and potential mess in the park and nearby streets while work proceeds and asked residents to watch the city web page and mailed notices for updates.
