Council proclaims May 3 World Migratory Bird Day in Fond du Lac

The Fond du Lac City Council unanimously approved resolution 9167 on Feb. 26 to declare May 3 as World Migratory Bird Day in the city and to support local Bird City activities.
Laura de Gallier, a local birder and science writer, addressed the council in support of the resolution and described local birding activities, educational events and an evening program with a rehabilitated kestrel on April 24. De Gallier said World Migratory Bird Day is “here to remind all of us that birds are an essential part of our world” and cited a long-term decline in bird populations: “We have lost 3,000,000,000 birds in the last 50 years.” She urged adoption of the resolution to help turn the trend.
Public Works Director DeVries said the resolution supports the city’s ongoing Bird City application and recommended approval. A motion to approve was made by Councilmember Mullen and seconded by Councilmember Heisler; the motion passed unanimously.
Council thanked organizers for coordinating walks and educational programming scheduled for April and May; staff noted the city has pursued Bird City recognition “for many, many years.”
