Offutt Air Force Base outlines month of the military child events, base exercise may cause delays

Colonel Kolesiak provided the Papillion La Vista Community Schools Board of Education with an update on Offutt Air Force Base activities that overlap with district events.
Kolesiak said the base is supporting nine schools for forthcoming Month of the Military Child events and will have a representative present at a Purple Star recognition event for the district on April 11. He said the base and the district will participate in related events across early April, including a Governor’s proclamation signing on April 10 and an Offutt proclamation and Easter event on April 19. On April 25, Kolesiak said the Bob Carey pedestrian bridge will be lit purple to highlight military‑family support in the Omaha area.
Kolesiak also warned of a major installation exercise that began the day of the meeting and will continue for about two weeks. He told the board to expect increased air traffic, higher noise levels and longer lines to get onto and off the base, and he asked for patience from families and staff. "We expect that there's going to be an increased air traffic, we expect there's going to be increased noise and there's going to be very long late, long lines trying to get onto the base and off of the base," Kolesiak said.
Board and district officials thanked the base for its partnership and recognized district staff and school leaders who helped secure Purple Star designations for buildings that support military families. The superintendent and board members noted upcoming recognition ceremonies and encouraged board members to attend.
