Developers for Chatham Commons presented a first-reading PUD amendment on March 24 for a six-story Element hotel with about 144 rooms on a 2.69-acre parcel near the Spring Hill Suites.
Kelly Mulder, representing E.L. Westfield LLC, said the hotel would be the first Element-branded extended-stay property in Westfield and would sit northwest of the Spring Hill Suites. The project would provide about 144 keys in a six-story building, creating synergies with the adjacent Spring Hill and increasing the combined Marriott inventory in one location to roughly 300 rooms. Mulder said the hotel would include a small meeting space of roughly 2,000 square feet, an outdoor pool and a limited bar/food offering; the design emphasizes a modern palette using black brick, hardy panels and architectural metal elements.
Site planning questions from councilors included detention modifications; Mulder said a detention area to the north would be slightly enlarged and that they were coordinating with the existing owner of the drainage facility to keep features on site. Councilor praise focused on design and the hotel's investment in the community. The amendment is scheduled for Planning Commission review on April 7.
