Church, Church, Hittle & Antrim attorney Matt Skelton and staff presented a first-reading amendment to the Maple Knoll PUD on March 24 that would permit a pet-supply store along Spring Mill Road while prohibiting the sale of cats and dogs.
Dane Crabtree of Community Development explained that the Maple Knoll PUD dates to 2004 and its use definitions were frozen under the prior zoning regime; the amendment updates the PUD to permit a pet-supply retail use and adjusts sign standards to match current UDO metrics. Matt Skelton explained that while veterinary and pet services (grooming, boarding) were permitted by the old PUD, the sale of pet food and supplies was not explicitly allowed without this update, so the amendment addresses that gap.
Councilor John Dart thanked the petitioner for adding language that does not permit the sale of dogs and cats; staff noted the store often supports adoption events in partnership with the local humane society. The matter is scheduled for a Planning Commission public hearing on April 7.
